Developing a Scenario: Retreat, then Advance

One of the things that distinguishes WisdomTools is our firm belief in the value of retreats. No, we're not talking about backwoods, marshmallow-roasting, Kumbaya-singing love-ins. Our retreats are focused, off-site meetings that provide a fresh (and fun) context in which to work with your Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to capture the essence of your Scenario.

The Stages

Stage 1: Pre-Retreat
Establishing Learning Objectives. Carefully defined learning objectives are the most crucial consideration when designing a Scenario. After all, if we don't know where you want your learners to end up, how can we help them get there? Through our clients' responses to certain key questions, we lay out a series of objectives that become a benchmarking tool for the entire Scenario creation process.

Stage 2: During the Retreat
Activities. At the retreat, business issues are identified and debated through a series of activities. Characters are developed by collecting input from the SMEs. Plot lines unfold. And before you know it, the groundwork for Scenario is in place.

Stage 3: Post-Retreat
Writing the Story. Once the retreat is over, we beat feet back to Bloomington where our content experts and Web developers map out an actual Scenario. In tandem with the client's SMEs, we perfect story lines and characters, create scenes and settings, and identify the embedded activities (Web links, audio and video clips, and artwork) that will give depth to the Scenario and address the learning objectives.

Stage 4: Implementation
Planning Implementation Strategy. Implementation is as important as the learning itself, and no two implementation processes are alike. Audience, content, time frame, outcomes, climate, stakeholders — these are just a few variables that define the right strategy. In addition, we know how to make Scenarios tick under these varying conditions.

Setting Up the Installation. Once the Scenario is written and approved, we set up a prototype for review and critique. The client works through the entire Scenario to ensure that learners will have a positive experience. Any issues that arise are addressed. WisdomTools issues log-in names and passwords to client-specified learners. Then the learning begins!

Other Considerations

To Facilitate or Not to Facilitate, That is the Question
The importance of qualified facilitators to help implement your Scenario cannot be over-stated. (See Eight Requirements for an E-Learning Vendor.) It is the facilitator who helps control the pace and flow of the learning process, answers questions, and monitors progress to ensure that your e-learning program is working properly. Many of our clients choose to use in-house facilitators to administer their Scenarios program. However, we can also make our professional facilitators available if necessary.

Consulting Services. To assist in the planning and ongoing implementation of our Scenarios, we offer a comprehensive consulting service designed to maximize your e-learning investment. Our consultants can help you track and measure results, so you can tell the rest of the story.
